Usually Greeks gave women no rights and did not let them own property or even choose their own husbands. This was the case in one of the city-states, Athens. Sparta, however, wanted warriors who could fight in case of an emergency or war, so they trained women just like men, both in a cruel way(they were taught to not cry or complain when they got severely hurt like a whip). However, because women had more rights, it shocked all other cities especially Athens. This is one of the main reasons why Sparta and Athens (the two Greek city-states) were considered as two very different cities. I hope this helped!!
