The answer is b. Despite being awarded with medals and getting treatment from the hospital, Nick and his fellow veterans feel that the treatment that they are getting is not enough. Not only are the machines inadequate as form of therapy, they all feel emotionally scarred by their experiences at the front. So they look out for each other because the shared experience that they all had in war.
