Why does dividing 5 by a decimal less than 1 give a quotient greater than 5

This is because when you divide any number by 1, it is itself. when you divide a number by anything by anything more than 1, the answer is less than the starting number. ex: 5/1 =5. 5/2 =2.5. So, because of reasoning and what the calculator will tell is that if you divide by anything less than one, it has to be greater. For example 5/.5=10. this can be easy if you know porportions. what you do with those is try to make the denominator an easier number to understand or the same as another fraction/mixed number. So, to take 5/.5=10, you can multiply the top and bottom numbers by 2 to get 10/1, which we know for a fact, will always equal 10.
