5 means there is 5 wholes a single whole in this case is 6/6 so do 6x5=30 plus the additional 1 would make 31/6 the correct improper fraction

5 1/6 is a mixed number. To put it into a/b fraction form means converting it to an improper fraction.
Multiply the denominator by the whole number then add the numerator. Put that over the original denominator.
5 1/6 = 6•5+1/ 6 = 31/6
