The Treaty of Versailles stripped Germany of 25,000 square miles of territory and 7 million people. It was also ordered to Germany to give up the gains the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk had left, and confer independence to the protectorates that had been installed. At the same time, restrictions were forced upon the post-war German armed forces, to leave them with no more than 100,000 men in a maximum of seven infantry and three cavalry divisions.
