if jane paid 40 dollars for an item after she recieved a 20% dicount. Janes friend says the original price of the item was 48 dollars. How do you think Janes friend arrived at this amount. Is her friend correct why or why not.

I think Jane's friend said the original price was $48 since 20% of 40 is 8. Then he/she added 8 to 40 to get 48.

Jane's friend is incorrect.

Jane paid 80% of the original price, which is 0.8 in decimal form. We can write an equation to help us find the original price (where p is the original price)

0.8p=40
----- ----
0.8 0.8
p=50

The original price was $50

she is wrong because the answer would be would be 50 because 40 dollars = 80% of original price. If you were to divide by both sides by 4. it would be 10 dollars= 20% you then times both sides by 5 and it would equal to 50 dollars=100%
