It wasn’t just his strength that Beowulf used to defeat Grendel. It was his confidence and courage. Prior to fighting Grendel, he had fought warriors and monsters a like. He had faced them with no fear and was sure that no matter how fierce or how strong his enemy was, he would no doubt triumph in the end.
