The first mistake was they didn't equal the equation to zero. In order to get the right solutions they must write:


\begin{gathered} x^2-5x+6=12 \\ x^2-5x-6=0 \\ (x+1)(x-6)=0 \end{gathered}

And the solution can be seen immediately.
