High energy particles called photons are absorbed by ions. The photons collide again and again until they reach the outer limits of the sun. Then they are released.

The energy starts from the core of the sun. Photons are formed from fusion and travel to the radiative zone where fusion doesn't occur. They collide until they reach the convection zone where rising gas currents help move the energy to the sun's surface.
