You have the following equation:

5 + 3y = 12

In order to solve the previous equation, proceed as follow:

5 + 3y = 12 subtract 5 both sides

3y = 12 - 5 simplify

3y = 7 divide by 3 both sides

y = 7/3

Hence, the solution to the given equation is y = 7/3
