To find out how much they both ate in all, you add the fractions of how much they ate. So that would be 3/8+1/8. And you add the numerators because the denominators are the same so that would be 4/8 or 1/2 of the pizza. Hope this helps.

and we know that 4/8 can be reduced to 1/2.

So, half of the pizza has been eaten so far.
