It was awkward.
The poem seems to describe an argument between two people. From the way it was written, it may be that the way the couple felt was what the poem is talking about. The way they walk in single file rather than side by side. They look forward instead of each other. This was probably after a very bad argument that left both people feeling bad. They don’t know what they say to each other and instead ignore each other as if something had come between them.
