Mahatma Gandhi urged his followers to use non-violent civil disobedience in their protest of British rule. Becoming the head of the Indian National Congress and brought together farmers and campaigned against high taxes and discrimination. He also campaigned against poverty and for the rights of women. No matter how harsh the actions of the British Gandhi continued to stress non-violent protest in his campaign to liberate India from British rule. Apart from employing this peaceful method of civil disobedience in India, Gandhi also used non-violent protest when he was in South Africa.
