The barter system was replaced by money, or currency. The barter system was a system where goods were exchanged. Now days, we give money for goods. But in ancient times, they gave goods for other goods.

It was the Barter which was gradually replaced with coins made of gold and silver. In ancient times, before coins were made, people used the barter system in where they are exchanging goods to be able to get what they need without the use of money.
Barter simply means swap.
For example:
A person will give another person a bucket of fish in exchange of a sack of rice.
Prior to the creation of gold or silver coins, it was the barter system that ruled the life of our ancestors.
