Answer:it is an ionic copmound because it is a metal and it reacts with elements in group 6 such as oxygen to form magnesium oxide because oxygen needs2 electrons in order to be stable and magnesium to lose 2 electrons for it to be stable

well oxygen has 6 electrons in its outer shell and mg has 2. Oxygen need two to complete it's outer shell and mg needs to lose 2 to gain a complete out we shell.
