A separate vote for President and Vice President was required by the Twelfth Amendment to the United States Constitution, ratified in 1804.

The amendment establishes that the electors will not be able to grant two votes for President, they will have to vote once for President and another for Vice President. In addition, one of these two candidates voted by the elector must be an inhabitant of another state than the elector.
