Basalt would most likely be formed in a volcanic eruption. Basalt is an extrusive rock that hardens from lava erupted at hotspots and divergent margins. Granite and gabrro are intrusive rocks and are formed beneath the earth's surface. The rock beneath continents is granite. Granite is a relatively bouyant rock and supports continents as they 'float' on the mantle below.
