Use ratios:
(40)/(100) = (8)/(?)

Since 40/8=5, then you do the same on the bottom. 100/5=20, so the sweater was originally $20.

If you would like to know what is the selling price of the sweater, you can calculate this using the following steps:

40% of x is $8
40% * x = 8
40/100 * x = 8 /*100/40
x = 8 * 100 / 40
x = $20

Result: The selling price of the sweater is $20.
