In 1863, civil war broke out between supporters of the ruling Tokugawa family and the supporters of the emperor Meiji, whose court had been isolated from any significant government role. The civil war culminated in the overthrow of Tokugawa government in 1868 and the restoration of the rule of the Emperor. The Meiji Restoration also brought sweeping changes in Japanese culture by ending the feudal social system and introducing a modern capitalist government system which encouraged formal education and embraced new technologies from the west.
