The sum of their age at the present:
49 -2*4= 49 -8= 41
Michael's present age is:
(41+ 17)/2= 29
Michael's present age is 29

Michael is 29, and John is 12.
In four years, michael will be 33 and john will be 16, which adds up to 49.
