The debate between U.S. Senator Daniel Webster of Massachusetts and Senator Robert Hayne of South Carolina was on the selling of cheap lands in the West. Underneath revealed the sharp divide between those who support the Union and those who advocated for state’s rights. Webster objected to the proposal and the debate between the two now touched other issues such as slavery, state sovereignty and secession. This would start a crisis between the North and the South. It even affected the relationship between President Andrew Jackson and and Vice President John Calhoun. Jackson made a toast to the Union while Calhoun made a toast to state’s rights.
