3 pumpkin pies/ 9 friends= 1/3 pumpkin pie/friend.
Each friend gets 1/3 pumpkin pie

If there are 3 whole pumpkin pies and there are 9 people, everyone would get 1/3 of the pie, reason: if the pie is divided into 3 pieces, 3 pieces make up 1, 3 of those make up 9
