The main reason why the United States were able to maintain a foreign policy of neutrality was that their Atlantic ocean provided a buffer from European interference (1). This hasn't only been the case with the US, but a lot of nations in the past where there was a separation by ocean or sea, Such nations could afford to maintain a policy of neutrality.
