Species are separated by both geographic location and characteristics of the species. For example, the Steller Sea Lion or the E. jubatus (the species from which sea LIONS get their name due to the males having a mane of longer fur around theit neck like a nornal lion does) is Latin for "maned". In comparison, the California Sea Lion is also a pinniped, however it drives its name from its location on the west coast with its name of Z. californianus.
