People went on pilgrimages to show devotion to God, as an act of penance, or to find a cure for illness.
Popular destinations: Jerusalem, Rome and Caterbury

Hope this helps ^_^

Answer:

People undertook pilgrimages in the Middle Ages because there was the belief by religious bodies about having prayers more likely answered when the prayer takes place at the pilgrim destination and that there was a higher chance of making heaven for going to such places.

Popular pilgrim sites are Rome, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Mecca etc
