Are you supposed to add exponents when you combine like terms to simplify an expression?

Add exponents only when you MULTIPLY terms.

So 4x^2 (3x^2) = 12x^4

No, you never add the exponents.

So for example if you have 4x^2 + 3x^2, your answer will be 7x^2
