The called Ellis Island the Island of Tears.
From 1892 to 1924, Ellis Island was America's most active immigration station. Seen by many as an Island of Hope, it soon became the Island of Tears for many as they were prohibited the entrance to the United States or the immigration process was a traumatic experience for them.
About 20% of all immigrants arriving at Ellis Island were detained and about 2% were turned away for good.
Immigrants had to pass many tests, mental and medical examinations and they also had to prove that they wouldn't be a burden on America's society. They were questioned about their previous occupations and moral beliefs, and they had to show that they have some money to support themselves in the States.
For many, Ellis Island became the Island of Tears, a place where families were separated and where the American Dream came to an abrupt end.
