What step did the colonists take to make sure that they would never be taxed without representation in the new United States?

One of the most important steps the Founders took in this regard was to implement a system of "checks and balances" between the three main branches of government, to ensure that no single branch could become too powerful and subsequently tyrannical in this fashion.
