How did the war affect European colonies and colonial subjects?

Assuming you're referring to the American Revolution, the best option from the list that was posted before with this question would be that it unhinged a lot of the trust that had existed between the colonies and their ruling countries--in that it showed that colonies had a way to express their grievances violently, which caused many rulers to panic.
