The United Nations (UN) is the largest existing international organization. It was created to maintain international peace and security, foster friendly relations among nations, achieve international cooperation to solve global problems and serve as a center that harmonizes the actions of nations.

In 1948 the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was proclaimed, one of the most outstanding achievements of the UN.

The founders of the UN expressed hope that this new organization would serve to prevent new wars. These desires have not come true in many cases.
