President Truman sent a fleet of ships to the island of Taiwan in 1949 to protect it from Red China. It was in the year 1949 that the government of Taiwan separated from China and created its own independent country. About 2 million Chinese Nationalists fled to Taiwan to create their own independent government in Taiwan. The government of China did not like this move and wanted to keep Taiwan under its own control. President Truman did not want this to happen and sent a fleet of ships to protect the country of Taiwan. This step by Truman actually would make China think twice before taking any military action against Taiwan.

In 1950, President Truman sent the United States Seventh Fleet to Taiwan to protect it from the People's Republic of China, after the outbreak of the Korean War.

Truman feared that the Chinese Communists would use the warlike context of the region to carry out a new attack against the nationalist forces located on the island of Taiwan.
