If Barb starts with a white bead, then a white bead will occur in every subsequent fourth bead. So it will be 1 + 4(7) to find the number of beads strung to get 8 white beads.

The first 8 white beads in the pattern is 8 white beads because 1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1=8. The pattern is 1 white, 3 blue, 1 white, 3 blue, and keep going on.= the same way.
