When you double numbers, you are basically multiplying it by 2.

The word 'double' itself means to make it go up by twice its value.

Example:-

22 doubled.

22*2 = 44

44*2 = 88

Count by 2's also helps.

2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14

2*2 = 4
4*2 = 8
8*2= 16

If by adding doubles, you mean 1+1, 2+2, 3+3..., than this helps because this is basically the essence of multiplying by two. You are taking the sum of two of the same number when you say (some number) multiplied by two. Therefore, saying 1 multiplied by 2 is saying taking two 1s and adding them together, which is 2.
