The sum is 18ft because 9in + 3in is 12in which is a foot. Then 12+1+5= 18ft

We already know that 1 ft= 12 in.
5 ft 9 in= 5 ft* (12 in/1 ft)+ 9 in= 69 in
12 ft 3 in= 12 ft* (12 in/1 ft)+ 3 in= 147 in
5 ft 9 in+ 12 ft 3 in= 69 in+ 147 in= 216 in
The final answer is
216 in
.
