Following World War II, Russia (or the Soviet Union as it was called at the time) created a number of satellite countries for itself in the region of Eastern Europe. All of them shared the characteristic of being communist and were considered to be a part of the Communist bloc. The reason why the Soviet Union did this was because they wanted to create a buffer zone between them and the Western powers.
