The Partition of India in 1946 was the division of what was known as British India into 2 separate dominions. One was The Dominion of India, which would become the Republic of India in 1950 and the other was the Dominion of Pakistan, which would become the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in 1956.
The British, who administered the whole territory known as British India, were in charge of the secession. However, they were not able to lead it in a peaceful way, as many demonstrations of violence erupted as a product of profound religious differences between the populations of Pakistan and India. As a result, 14 million people who lived in the frontier were displaced and an estimated amount of 1 million people died.
