What does a mans home is his castle mean?

Well people like to believe they are the rulers of where they live and that those who don't live there have no right to enter the household without asking the ruler.

his home is his sanctuary, where he feels safe (as castles were built to protect the inhabitants)

a place where he feels protected from the outside world
