Let

x---------> the first number

x+1------> the second number

we know that

(x+1)^(2) -x^(2) =17\\ x^(2) +2x+1-x^(2) =17\\ 2x+1=17\\ 2x=16\\ x=8

so

x=8\\ x+1=9

therefore

the answer is

the numbers are

8,9
