Why were the westerners so determined to colonize Southeast Asia?

Westerners wanted to invade Southeast Asia because its geography was privileged because it was located between 2 great cultures (Chinese culture and Indian culture)

also Southeast Asia has many geographical and fluvial advantages generating a lot of trade thanks for its rivers

One of the main reasons why westerners were so determined to colonize Southeast Asia is because they adhered to the principle of "Manifest Destiny," which held that the US was "destined" to expand.
