The two terms that best describe the role of the United States favored by most Americans as World War I broke out were neutrality and isolationism. When WW I broke out most Americans thought that the U.S. should stay out of the conflict, neutral. Due to Europe's distance to the U.S., most Americans believed in isolationism. "Thank God for the Atlantic Ocean", was often heard. President Wilson declared that the United States would stay neutral.

The best two terms in terms of the overall attitude of Americans as World War I broke out would be "neutrality, isolationism," since the US was very uninterested in getting involved in a European war.
