2x + y = 5
-x + y = -4

2x + y = 5
-(2)x + (2)y = (2)5

(x cancels) 3y = 15

y = 5

plug y into one of the two original equations to solve for x:

5 = x - 4

x = 9

The answer is x = 9, y = 5, or (9, 5)

If you would like to solve y = x - 4 and 2 * x + y = 5, you can do this using the following steps:

y = x - 4
2 * x + y = 5
_____________
2 * x + (x - 4) = 5
2 * x + x = 5 + 4
3 * x = 9 /3
x = 9 / 3
x = 3

y = x - 4 = 3 - 4 = -1

The correct result would be x = 3 and y = -1.
