Lesson: Adding and subtracting Like Fractions:

Solve
1/9 + (-5/9)=?

3/8 + (-7/8)=?

-3/4 + (-3/4)=?

Lesson: Adding and subtracting Unlike Fractions:

Solve
(-7/10) - (2/5)=?

(-4/9) - (2/15)=?

P.S: The parentheses are just so the negative (-) and positive (+) numbers and signs don't get mixed up! Thank you for your help!

1)
(1)/(9) + - (5)/(9) = \fbox {-4/9} \ \sf or \ \fbox {-0.4444}
Steps: Simplify brackets, subtract numerators.

2)
(3)/(8) + - (7)/(8) =
\fbox {-1/2} \ \sf or \ \fbox {-0.5}
Steps: Simplify brackets, subtract numerators, simplify into simplest form.

3)
- (3)/(4) + - (3)/(4) = \fbox {-3/2} \ \sf or \ \fbox {-1.5}
Steps: Simplify brackets, add numerators, change into simplest form.

1)
- (7)/(10) - (2)/(5) = \fbox {-11/10} \ \sf or \ \fbox {-1.1}
Steps: Simplify brackets, simplify.

2)
- (4)/(9) - (2)/(15) = \fbox {-26/45} \ \sf or \ \fbox {-0.5778}
Steps: Simplify brackets, simplify.

When adding/subtracting like fraction, simply keep the denominators the same, and add/subtract the numerators

1/9+(-5/9)= -4/9

3/8+(-7/8)= -4/8

-3/4+(-3/4)=-6/4

When adding/subtracting unlike fractions, We have to find the LCM of the denominators, and then find the fractions equivalent with that denominator. Then add/subtract the numerators.

-7/10 - 2/5= -7/10 - 4/10= -11/10

-4/9 - 2/15= -20/45 - 6/45= -26/45
