Active listening involves responding to what you heard by paraphrasing and summarizing it back to the speaker in order for clarification and understanding. Parents use it because it can strengthen the level of clarification between them and their children as well bringing greater connection and cooperation to the relationship

Active listening is a technique that can be found in therapeutical services and is often used by therapists to listen to their client. It improves the relationship between the client and the therapist. When this is translated to a parent-child setting, it can work the same way - parents can actively listen to their child which then improves their relationship. Active listening itself involves some approaches that can be used by parents as well.
