1 volt is the difference in potential that 1 coulomb of charge requires 1 joule of energy
in order to cross, or gives up 1 joule of energy in crossing, depending on the sign of the
charge and whether it climbs or falls through the 1 volt.

1 volt = 1 joule per coulomb
