Dictatorship:

one person (or a small groups of people) have all the power in the country and they keep this power by fear. For example, right now in North Korea many people and their families are dying if they don't agree with the regime

Democracy:

the leader does not have full control over the people and can be removed if the people don't agree with how the leader, or at least not get elected again. For example, right now in Brazil people are dissatisfied with the government of Dilma Rousseff so they likely won't elect her again.

While I'm not exactly sure which countries you've studies, I can provide you with two main differences between a dictatorship and a democracy.

In a democracy people get to vote where each person gives a vote which is worth something as he/she is a part of nation that decided on their new representative. In dictatorship this is absent. People are not allowed to vote on anything.

Another difference is that in a democracy you have an active government with a elected president. In a dictatorship you have a self-appointed leader of a country which doesn't allow people to tell him how he should run his country.
