Genetic defects are associated with both abnormal autosomes as well as abnormalities in the gender-based chromosomes. Autosomal abnormalities occur if there is an abnormality on any of the first 22 pairs of chromosomes. The abnormality is linked to gender if it occurs on the twenty-third chromosomal pair. Both of these abnormalities are due to chromosomal errors or genetic mutation.
Downs Syndrome is a common genetic disorder that causes developmental delays and health problems. This disorder occurs when the person has extra genetic material added to the twenty-first chromosome.
