Most African nations gained their independence from colonial rule during the C. 1960s. Some years after World War II, 17 African countries were granted independence. Most of these country rulers were very optimistic about their countries' future at independence. They faced problems of national unity and cohesion, poverty and underdevelopment, unemployment, under-employment, and civil wars.
