What is one reason people used to think that nothing could live deep down in the ocean?

I think that this has to do with the light: life is seen as derived from the solar energy, which cannot reach the deepest parts of the ocean, and since people expected life cycle to start with plants which need solar energy.

However, there are also other kinds of organisms deep in the ocean that use other kind of energy, such as energy derived from sulfur
