y = x - 5

The rate of change is synonymous with the slope.

The slope is 1.

The average rate of change over any interval is 1.

average rate of change=slope

f(x)=x-5
f(x) could be subsitututed with y so
y=x-5
this is in y=mx+b form where m=slope and b=y-intercept
y=1x-5
slope=1
average rate of change=1/1
if x=-2 then
y=-2-5
y=-7

if x=1 then
y=1-5
y=-4

the graph of y=x-5 is included in the attachment
