During the Second Great Awakening the revivalist preachers encouraged Americans to achieve a more "pure" and "moral" society and this notion was very present during this time. This meant eradicating sin in all parts of life. There was equal parts an idea of a primitive view of the Bible, so that basically all aspects of Christian life are pure and simple.
